2017 FIA European Formula 2 champion Charles Leclerc debuted in Formula One in 2018 driving for Sauber. 2018 was the first season for the Swiss F1 team when they partnered with Alfa Romeo, and Leclerc and his teammate Markus Ericsson had Sauber C37 car painted in Alfa Romeo livery. The C37 designed by Jörg Zander and Luca Furbatto, was powered by customer Ferrari 036 engine. Leclerc first finished in points in the fourth round of the championship, at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Then he demonstrated very stable performance finishing mostly in top-10 (but never in top-5) and collected 39 points in total, the amount which placed him to 13th position in the season drivers’ standings. Leclerc was the first Monégasque Formula One driver since Olivier Beretta in 1994.
