The MP4/15 was the direct development of MP4/14, the Championship winning car from the previous season. Designed by Adrian Newey, equipped with reliable and powerful Mercedes-Benz V10 engine and driven by Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard, MP4/15 was one of the major contenders for the Championship along with Ferrari F1-2000 in hands of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barichello. The car proved highly competitive and scored seven victories (4 by Hakkinen and 3 by Coulthard), but was still narrowly beaten to both championships by Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari F1-2000. Mika won in Spain, Austria, Hungary and Belgium and took 2nd position in the final Championship standings. In majority of the races McLaren used ‘West’ logos. The exceptions were British and French Grands Prix, where tobacco advertising was replaced with driver’s names.
