The B198 was designed by Nick Wirth and powered by V10 Renault engine badged as Playlife, a fashion company based in Treviso, Italy owned by the Benetton family. It was driven by Giancarlo Fisichella, who had moved from Jordan, and Alexander Wurz, who was in his first full season of F1. The performance of B198 was good, especially in the first half of the season. Benetton even held third place in the Constructors’ Championship after Fisichella finished second at two successive races and took pole position in Austria. The second half of the year was less successful and the team found itself on the 5th position in the final Constructors’ standings. Fisichella finished the season in the 9th position with 16 points while his team-mate Wurz was one position above with 17 points scored.
