The R28 was raced in the 2008 season by Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet Jr. The car new features included longer wheelbase and improved aerodynamics. From the 2008 Spanish Grand Prix the R28 used “shark-fin” engine cover, first introduced by Red Bull on their RB4. The team retained its official name “ING Renault”, the sponsorship by Dutch ING banking group, as well as yellow-orange-white livery. The first part of the season was disappointing for both Renault team and Fernando Alonso. However at the end of the season after significant aerodynamics changes of the car Alonso won in Singapore and Japan. The former race saw Renault order his teammate Nelson Piquet Jr. to crash deliberately and trigger the deployment of the safety car in what became known as “crashgate”.
