Chip Ganassi Racing, one of the most successful teams in North American open-wheel racing, competed in the CART FedEx Championship Series since 1990. Ganassi initially entered the Indy Racing League (IRL) with Indy-500 only in 2000 and 2001 – first time with Juan Pablo Montoya and Jimmy Vasser in the 2000 Indianapolis 500 won by rookie Montoya, and then in 2001 with Vasser, Bruno Junqueira, Nicolas Minassian, and NASCAR’s Tony Stewart. For 2002, Ganassi made the jump to the IndyCar Series full-time with Jeff Ward driving one car, with the addition of Ganassi’s two CART Championship drivers Kenny Brack and Bruno Junqueira at Indianapolis. Swedish Kenny Brack, 1999 Indy-500 winner, finished 11th in the 2002 edition of Indianapolis race. In CART he ended the 2002 season in 6th position in the final standings by winning the CART season finale Mexico City G.P., which turned out to be his only win in major North American open-wheel racing on a road or street circuit.
