In the 1994 season the European Truck Racing had undergone major organizational changes. Now called European Truck Racing Cup (ERTC), it was sanctioned by FIA, and featured two classes of vehicles – Super Race Trucks (SRT) and Race Trucks (RT). For purpose-built race trucks (SRT) engine size was restricted to 12 litres, and minimal weight of the truck was 5000 kg. Power distribution on the axes was free, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and  Anti-Slip Regulation ASR) were prohibited. RT class vehicles were closer to production trucks. Minimal weight was set to 5800 kg, with no less than 3800 kg to front axle. ABS, ASR and automated transmission were not allowed, and power of turbocharged engines was limited by obligatory use of air restrictor.

Works team of the Dutch truck manufacturer DAF debuted in the 1996 ETRC season. The team sponsored by Belgian oil company Fina hired experienced truck racing drivers Richard Walker and Hans-Georg von der Marwitz. Both were among pioneers of the European truck racing. Walker, professional truck driver, started truck racing with British Leyland in 1986, and was 1991 and 1992 ETRO Class A European Truck Racing Champion with Volvo White. Before joining DAF Fina Racing Team he raced with Russian  ZIL and ZIL-Caterpillar trucks.

German von der Marwitz was professional journalist, who worked for the German “Trucker” magazine. He started his truck racing career in 1985 with MAN. In 1988 Marwitz finished third in the then class B. In 1989 he had a big fight with the Swede Curt Goransson and eventually finished as vice champion. Marwitz also won the British truck racing Championship in 1989.  In 1990 he was third in the ETRC beaten by the Volvo N12 of Goransson and the Sisu SR340 of Jokke Kallio. In next three seasons,  1991, 1992 and 1993 he was always just short of champion. In 1994 he switched to the Superrace trucks, and joined the DAF Fina truck racing team in 1996. After 1996, he retired from truck racing and decided to devote more time and attention to his profession as a journalist.

The 1996 ETRC title in Super Race Trucks class was won by British Steve Parrish in Mercedes-Benz. DAF Fina Racing Team drivers finished fourth (Walker) and sixth (von der Marwitz).

The 1/50 scale models of DAF Fina truck was made Lion Toys for Dutch promotional company De Backer Specials.
