The Gran Premio National was a speed motor racing competition in stages, held annually between 1910 and 1934 (and even until 1980 under other tittles), on public roads in Argentina and, in some editions, neighboring countries. The first edition in 1910 was between the cities of Buenos Aires and Córdoba and was won by Juan Cassoulet. In 1930s the Grand Premio was held as Formula Libre events. In 1931 the race started in Luján, a city in the province of Buenos Aires, and finished in Cordoba. 43 equipages started the hard race, which lasted for two days – 7 and 8 February. Thirteen cars were able to rich the finish line, and Carlos Zatuszek with his co-driver, car owner and brother-in-law Julio Berndt won the race in Mercedes Benz SSKL car covering the distance in 15 hours 44 minutes and 40 seconds. Second finisher, Alberto Ansaldo in Hudson arrived after more than 3 hours.
Carlos (Karl) Zatuszek was born in Lemberg (now Lwow), then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He served as a mechanic in the Austro-Hungarian Empire Army during the First World War, and in 1921 he immigrated to Argentina. Carlos had their racing debut in the 1927 Gran Premio Provincia de Santa Fe, quickly becoming one of the leading Argentinean drivers. When Zatuszek got the 7-litre Mercedes-Benz SSK, he soon started to obtain great racing results; the crowds nicknamed Carlos “El Alemano” – and the mighty car, “El Omnibus”. His younger brother Miguel arrived to Argentina and started to race as Carlos’ co-driver. Carlos won a number of races in Argentina, first notable wins happened at La Tablada en Córdoba in 1929, and at Los 400 km de Mercedes the following year. After 1931 Gran Premio Carlos with Miguel by his side won the Premio Otoño in 1931, 1932 and 1935, Las 200 Millas de Tucumán in 1935, 500 Millas races of Rafaela, Bahía Blanca and San Francisco in 1936, and the Lavallol, Olavarría, and again Rafaela and San Francisco races in 1937. In October 1937 Carlos Zatuszek was killed in an accident when testing his SSKL in sight of the Gran Premio Ciudad de Casilda, near Rosario, province of Santa Fe.
